Agricultural and pastoral production
  • Agriculture was the basis for early Egyptian societies.
  • The Nile River floodplains provided excellent farm land for Egytians.
  • However, Egytians benefited more from the Nile than the Nubians to the south.
  • High productivty led to a growing popuation and larger cities along the Nile.
Trade and Commerce
  • Early Egytians began only trading short distances with Nubia.
  • After some expansion and advances, they started trading long distances to Punt, Mesopotamia, and parts of the Mediterranean.
  • Egyptians traded such things as; gold, silver, gemstones, textiles, linens, and pottery.
  • They recieved common items for labor and city use.
  • However, some special imports they recieved were wood from Mesopotamia and rare animals and beasts of burden from Punt.
Labor Systems
  • The cities of Egypt had specialized labor workers but did not use bronze until after the expulsion of the Hyskos.
  • There were specialized workers for almost every job, leading to many technological advances.
  • Some specialized jobs included; woodworking, stonecutting, masonry, leatherworking, and pottery.
Industrialization
  • Following the banishment of the Hyskos, Egypt entered a period of industrialization.
  • Egyptians learned iron metallurgy and started using iron for most tools.
